The World Government is considered the entity with the highest authority in the Word. The Marine works directly under the umbrella of the World Government to protect the people and maintain peace in the world.
The overall objectives of the marines might be public knowledge and the authorities ruling over the Word Government goals are very much a mystery even to the Marine officers themselves.
The World Government was founded 800 years ago, an alliance of 20 kingdoms and evolved in influence and power into a federation of over 170 nations spread across the world. The World Government’s capital is the city of Mary Geoise, atop the Red Line, where the Reverie, the gathering of Kings and queens affiliated with the federation, takes place. The World government is ruled by the Celestial Dragons, the descendants of its founders known as the World Nobles, chief among them the Five Elders also called the Gorosei. Above the Gorosei reigns, in secret from the world itself, the highest authority called Imu.
The reality of the World Government is that even though it has over 170 nations which includes kingdoms, the Celestial Dragon are the absolute rulers in the world. The Celestial Dragons believe they are gods on Earth and are treated as such. They live in extreme luxury and possess near-unlimited power. The Celestial Dragons take anything and anyone they desire. They reduce living to slavery, torture and inhuman experiences and can kill anyone without any repercussion, including Royals.
Aside from the behavior of Celestial Dragons, there is a dark secret surrounding the origin and foundation of the Word Government that occurred during the Void Century, a whole 100 years lost in the history of time, before the World Government came to be. The Gorosei has explicitly forbidden any and all research on the Void Century and sentenced to death any individual that tries to reveal anything regarding what happened during that period of history.
The World Government’s primary goal seems to be preserving and reinforcing their unchallenged position at the top of the social hierarchy and that doesn’t always align with the values of the Marine or the justice they are supposed to uphold.
The Marine Corps is the World Government’s main military force across the seas. As stated the Marine goal is to protect the people and maintain peace in the world from any threat. The Marine Corps has several branch offices and they are led by the Fleet Admiral, followed by their main powerhouses, the 3 Admirals.
There are two great threats that the Marines have identified which are the pirates and the Revolutionary Army. But any person, group or entity that attacks a Celestial Dragon or that is designated by the World Government as an enemy or a global threat automatically becomes the target of the Marines.
Some marine officers, such as Jaguar D. Saul and even Monkey D. Dragon, have left the Marine due to the lack of justice they witnessed during their service. Some marines like Smoker, Issho Fujitora and Monkey D. Garp choose to change the Marine from the inside. Garp has been training the next generation of marine officers, like his prodigy Koby and Helmeppo, to become the future of the Marine.
Do all the Marines really know about all the crimes made by the Celestial Dragons? Would those marines really not question the authority of the World Government if they are ordered to enslaved people and kill them? No! There are many marines who would not follow any orders that go against the code of justice. Those marines don’t care about the politics of the World Government and only prioritize the humanitarian goals of the Marine Corps. But there are also marines who blindly follow any order from the Word Government no matter how unjust or inhuman those orders may be.
The question is: what will happen if a situation forces those two groups of marines into an open disagreement?
One thing is for sure something isn’t “right” in the Marine Corps. The Marine is influenced if not morally tainted by the World Government and more precisely by the Celestial Dragons, the Gorosei and above all Imu.
Ohara has been destroyed for the research conducted on the Poneglyphs that tell the lost history of the Void Century. The kingdom of Lulusia was “erased” for rebelling against the World Government and siding with the Revolutionary Army. Dr. Vegapunk who has worked for the Government for decades has been targeted for assassination for continuing the research of the Ohara’s scientists on the Void Century. Any person who has lived on Ohara or Egghead and somehow manages to escape the destruction of their island is marked for death by the Gorosei just because they might have learned something about the Void Century.
- What will happen if the world learns that the Gorosei murdered king Cobra?
- What will happen if the world learns that the Gorosei is behind the total destruction of the Lulusia Kingdom?
- What will happen if the World Government, or more precisely, the Gorosei and Imu become the global threat against the well-being of any living being that isn’t a Celestial Dragon?
- What will happen if the Void Century is actually somehow revealed to the whole Word?
- What will the Gorosei and Imu do to prevent the secrets they are hiding from coming to light?
- What will the Gorosei and Imu do if the secrets they are hiding get exposed to public knowledge?
- Will all the nations affiliated with the World Government stay in the federation or will they rebel against it creating internal conflict?
- Will all the Marines side with the Gorosei then or will there be conflict inside the Marine Corps itself?
All these possibilities mentioned don’t seem to be just a matter of “if they will happen” but more increasingly becoming a matter of “when they will happen”.
