For any good or great plan to work properly and efficiently, information is crucial. No matter how good your plan may be, if the information you base it on is outdated or incorrect, the plan will fail regardless of its execution. In that consideration, it’s not just about making a good long term plan, it’s also about being able to modify your plan at any time using new information when needed. It’s about doing and redoing the preparations and tweaking them when needed to make sure you have all the knowledge and requirements to realize your plan.
In One Piece, being a good planner or strategist is not enough, you absolutely need the strength to turn your plan into a reality. Occasionally having the right and competent partner in crime is also a major factor. Since the beginning of the story of One Piece, we’ve seen many planners and strategists in action, Captain Kuro, Mr. 3, Nico Robin, Crocodile, Eneru, Doflamingo, Caesar Clown…, Law, … Many of them have witnessed their plan fail due to their own defeat after assuming they had the required preparation and enough power to fulfill it.
As a single individual whose plans are not all known yet, Marshall D. Teach aka Blackbeard is the only character to have various plans succeeding one after the other without anyone knowing his main goal. From what we’ve learned about him, Blackbeard, after doing his research and gaining information, puts himself in a situation in order to make due on his plan and assure its success.
Blackbeard know original plans:
- after researching all the known devils fruits and learning all he could about them, Blackbeard joined Whitebeard’s pirate crew in order to one day obtain the Darkness Devil Fruit, considered to be the strongest of all;
- after researching how to become a Shichibukai, he make an accomplishment worthy to gain the title;
- and knowing that the title of Shichibukai would gain him access to impenetrable prison Impel Down, which would allow him to free and recruit powers crew members form Level 6;
- based on his knowledge on the devil fruit and other unknown knowledge to us, he knew how to gain the power of a second devil fruit which was considered globally impossible to do. With that knowledge we gain the power of what he considered the strongest paramecia devil fruit to achieve his main goal;
- after gaining the Earthquake devil fruit power, Blackbeard declare himself as the “strongest man alive” succeeding to Whitebeard and become a global threat;

Blackbeard know original plans that were changed or temporally disrupted:
- Blackbeard’s original plan was to defeat and capture Luffy who defeated the last Shichibukai and then bring his head to the Marine in order to become the new Shichibukai. Due to Ace’s interference, Blackbeard brought Ace to the Marine instead of Luffy thus earning him the title of Sea Warlord with a precedent bounty of 0 Berry on his head.
- Even though it wasn’t his original plan, realizing that Ace’s capture and execution will lead to war between the marine and Whitebeard’s pirates, Blackbeard was able to create a situation where he might be able to steal whitebeard devil fruit power after all the chaos and fighting.
- In Impel Down, Blackbeard and his crewmates were surprisingly easily defeated by Magellan’s poison devil fruit power, which was an unforeseen outcome for him. But, as Blackbeard himself put it, “fate” brought the deserter Shiryu as their savior by giving them the antidote. After that, Black beard was able to carry on with his original plan to free and recruit the Level 6 prisoners of Impel Down.

As it stands, Blackbeard’s main goal is not clear to us. The only hint we were given was by Van Augur when he answered Gorosei Saturn’s question regarding the Blackbeard Pirates’ goal, and the answer was “the World” (episode 1141). Whether it’s changing the world, its destruction or its conquest, one thing is certain, it will require a lot of planning and actions to make those plans succeed. Currently, not even the World Government and the Gorosei know what Blackbeard’s plans and goals are and they haven’t been able to prevent them from succeeding. Gorosei Saturn himself qualified the Blackbeard Pirates’ moves as “strange” (episode 1141). Blackbeard’s plans have yet to be stopped entirely by anyone. He has information, the power of at least two devil fruits at his disposal and can use haki. All of that makes Blackbeard one the most dangerous and efficient planner in the One Piece world. His goal is unknown and his plans are unknown.
