One Piece isn’t just about piracy and adventures!
When One Piece started many thought it was going to be a shonen manga about adventure, fantasy and quest to become the Pirate King, like the first episode and chapter of the series suggested. Turns out the manga is about all of that and so much more. .
The story of One Piece takes place in a world of vast oceans and islands, where there are pirates, marine soldiers, revolutionaries, bounty hunters, royals, researchers, celestial dragons, and a lot of mysteries. Amongst those mysteries are devil fruits that grant powers to those who eat them, poneglyphs, Ancient Weapons that could destroy the world, the power of Haki, a whole century lost in history called the Void Century, and much much more. In this fantastic world, there are also many diverse races: humans, fish-men, merfolks, skypieans, dwarves, three-eyed peoples, minks, giants, lunarians, buccaneers, hybrid races ….
The One Piece series’ main character is this young man Monkey D. Luffy who is set on becoming the next King of the Pirates. In order to achieve his goal, Luffy has to set sail, build his pirate crew, fight many enemies, become famous and ultimately find the legendary treasure, called “One Piece”, left somewhere in the World by the former pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Luffy and his pirate crew, known as the “Straw Hat Pirates,” or “Straw hats” travel from island to island, sea to sea, meeting numerous people, discovering different places and races, encountering various adversaries, avoiding and sometimes fighting the marine, occasionally freeing the oppressed from oppression, forming alliance with unforeseen allies when necessary, and uncovering secrets about the world, through their adventures. .
The manga doesn’t just follow the adventures of Luffy alongside his crew members, who each has his or her own dream to fulfill, but it also showcases many other events and mysteries that unfold as the story goes on. .
In the One Piece series we don’t only encounter pirates and marines, no! We have pirates who seek adventures, freedom and treasure, marines soldiers and officers whose missions are to protect regular civilians from any arms and the criminal actions of pirates, the World Government who oversees the Marine but seem to have its own dark and secret agendas and prevents anyone from finding the truth about the Void Century, the revolutionary Army founded by Luffy’s father, a former marine, who sole mission is to take down the Word government, ….
One Piece is filled with various, intriguing, funny, likeable, loveable, hateable and unique characters. The manga addresses several themes. Some of the central themes of the story are friendship, love, family, death, willpower, adventure, oppression, freedom, racism, government corruption, many dark realities in the word, and the pursuit of one’s dreams. The manga storyline has intricate world-building, well-developed characters, exciting actions, hilarious humor, and real life lessons to think on..
